What Happened While I was Gone

I went on a little trip with the boys and left the garden in my husbands hands.  I was a little worried, because I water the garden in the morning and evening.  My husband is not a morning person.  In fact, I called every morning to make sure he woke up in time to get to work.  He did take the "easy" way out by completely flooding the garden.  He said that my book (which is AWESOME) to flood the garden and get the salts flushed out.  Well he watered my garden and kept it alive.  He even picked tomatoes and gave them to the neighbors (which I did before we left).  When we got back and I went to look at my garden, I was amazed to find the following
Grey Zucchinis

Crooked Neck Squash with tomatoes, peppers, and white pumpkins

A bowl full of tomatoes with some on the side
Needless to say I am going to be making salsa!  I also have egg plant flowering and my watermelons are looking good.  The cantaloupe is doing much better too.  I even think there is a cantaloupe coming up wild by our compost.   As for the grapes, well, there have been some curved-billed thrashers around, so Birdie Cafe is now open for business again.

This week in the garden

This was a rough week.  We had a little bit of a storm.  I was not able to let the boys go jump in the puddles and play in the rain like I normally would because of the wind and lightning.  I was able to open the entire house and let the breeze rain come in!  But that meant that the baby was at the front door banging on it to go out and play.

But the garden also was effected.  Half of the corn was blown over!  One is not going to make it but the others I used tape and tied it to the lattice that hubby put up on the wall to give it some support.

One of the beautiful apples that are growing big and beautiful!

White Pumpkin!  So cool, but don't know what we are to do with them?

Looking up at the corn.  I LOVE THIS PICTURE!

Start of May in the Garden

It is now May and the heat is coming  here.  But the garden is doing amazing.  In my time doing this I have learned that you must water it BY HAND TWICE a day.  I soak the ground so that there is standing water when I am done.  It gradually sinks down but this way I know that it is getting deep enough.  As you will see the garden is doing great!  In fact the watermelons have finally decided to make an appearance!
Corn is flowering
Much taller than knee high and it is only StarWars Day ;)

Attempting to try some vertical gardening

My husband has also started a new addition to the yard~  It is a MONSTER!  He is custom building a tree fort (or the best we can do with our young trees) and swing set for the boys.  Here it is (work in progress)

New garden space and finished projects

We have a new garden! We took a family trip to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum last week and David really wanted to start a cactus garden. So in the planter by Micah's fountain, that is what he did. I think he got 18 plants!

Here they are all planted!

One has even been blooming! However it is always closed when David sees it!!!

David has had another project in the works for 3 years or so! Well, because he wants to start another one (and I am putting my foot down on finishing one before starting another) he finished it! We now have a bench around our middle tree! IT IS AMAZING AND ALWAYS IN THE SHADE!

And now for the veggie garden! The tomatoes are crazy!
The corn is popping up in a row and is knee high before the Forth of July ;)

The beans and pumpkins are growing nicely!

Starting to get pepper buds!

Harvested some of the radishes! And have a couple of tomatoes from my one planter!

Oh, another finished project is the trellis on the brick wall. We are trying to "cool" the wall. In our summer that wall is always in the sun and scorches the plants through the entire night. Not good. So this is an experiment to see if we can deflect some of the heat.
